"HOW DOES IT GO?"

Often students want to know how the music sounds.  Here are some resources to hear your solo:

  • The method book often has an attached CD
  • Your teacher can play the piece for you!
  • Look the piece up on SMARTMUSIC which is available on the CMS music room computers.
  • Look the piece up on itunes and download it to your computer
  • Go to your public library and borrow the CD
  • Ask more advanced students to play your piece for you

"How do I know what size

instrument to rent or purchase?"

Instrument Sizing

Bowed stringed instruments are made in many different sizes for players of all ages.  Students begin lessons on the instrument in the size that fits them and trade up as they grow.  It is very important to begin taking lessons on the proper size instrument or students can have technical problems.

Each teacher has his/her own approach for sizing students.
Sizing by age for children is not recommended as children of the same age may be of significantly different heights and arm lengths.

The instructions provided below demonstrate sizing for violin, and viola.  They are intended as guidelines only and represent one approach for properly sizing instruments.

Violin and Viola Sizing
This approach may be used to determine the correct size of violin or viola.
  1. Extend the left arm from the body in a straight position.
  2. Position the violin or viola upside down under the arm,  with the strings facing the floor.   Wrap the fingers around the scroll and support the instrument against the side of the body. In this position, the instrument is of proper size.

REMEMBER!

The fingers will be unable to reach around the scroll on an instrument that is too large and there will be too much bend in the arm on an instrument that is too small.

Should I take private lessons?"

Of course!  All  students benefit from private lessons.  A private lesson with a qualified professional will help your technique and prepare you for the challenges of a solo or orchestral music.
