Note Reading

  • Music reading is based on a system using written icons representing musical pitch. The icon or notehead is placed on spaces or through lines called the staff.
  • The staff  has five lines and four spaces.
  • A sign called a clef is written on the staff to identify the register of the instrument.
  • Violins read treble clef
  • Violas read alto clef
  • Cello and Bass read bass clef
  • Each line and space represents a pitch in the musical alphabet.
  • The musical alphabet is a repeated sequence of notes identified by the letters A-B-C-D-E-F-G
